My heart breaks for the United States of America. It breaks for those who think they are my enemies as much as it does for my friends. You still have your freedom, so use it. There are many groups organizing for both resistance and subsistence, but we are heading into dark times, and you need to be your own light. Do not accept brutality and cruelty as normal even if it is sanctioned. Protect the vulnerable and encourage the afraid. If you are brave, stand up for others. If you cannot be brave – and it is often hard to be brave – be kind.

Dear Ms. Spayd,

I am a long-time subscriber of
the paper and am increasingly
disappointed by the paper’s failure to stand for truth and against
propagandist subterfuge during the past election and now during its

With shock, horror, and disappointment, I read today’s New York Times article “Alt-Right Exults in Donald Trumps Election with a Salute: ‘Heil Victory’”,
about the neo-Nazi movement lead by Richard Spencer and its recent
meeting in Washington DC. Despite recording unabashedly Nazi-inspired
ideas, phrases, statements, and even Nazi-style extended arm salutes,
the Times reporter used “alt-right” – Spencer’s own preferred
moniker – rather than more accurate and direct terms to describe the
group. The Times should decline to use this craven and Orwellian
term, one that hides the true nature of so-called “white nationalist”
organizations and their aims. The term is designed to deflect natural
and instinctive negative reactions to more accurate names, no different
than the bland, innocuous name of Spencer’s own think tank, “National
Policy Institute” is intended to mask its abhorrent agenda.

When organizations espouse Nazi rhetoric, the Times
should use proper descriptive terms – Nazi, neo-Nazi, or fascist –
rather than the preferred make-nice terms these groups use to describe
themselves and cloak their repellent aims in generic, mainstream
