A friend of mine quotes the Zen teacher Seung Sahn: ‘The one who praises you is a thief. The one who criticizes you is your true friend.’ Everything is a whetstone. Neglect of whetstone practice in international politics leads to world conflict. ‘He can’t do that to me,’ becomes ‘They can’t do that to us.’ Speaking of anger, it makes me angry to see world leaders behave like willful children. And yet, they are speaking for their people, for us all.
