Social Detox

Last night I made a clean sweep. I deleted Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Foursquare and Instagram from my phone. I’d been contemplating doing this for a month or two, but I finally did it. I’m not sure what finally pushed me over the edge.

This morning, I took the kids to the library. I had an impulse to check-in on Foursquare. I pullout out my phone, but the app wasn’t there. I remembered what I’d done the night before and I was happy about. I put the phone away and forgot about it.

Obviously I’m not disengaging from social networks altogether. I’m posting this on Tumblr. In a flash it’ll go to Twitter and end up on Facebook. But I am trying to be more concentrated, deliberate, and thoughtful about using social networks. And, in the end, I hope to better enjoy my real, physical experiences, friends and family.
